The Almanack of Naval Ravikant: A Guide to Wealth and Happiness

By: Eric Jorgenson

This is the best book I read in November 2020.

It was a difficult decision, as I read many great books this month. Yet, If I could only read one out of the four I finished this month, I would pick this one.

If you value wisdom and want to attain it, this will be a great book for you.

I’ve been following Naval thanks to Tim Ferriss. I’ve listened to the podcast interviews they’ve done together also read Naval insights in Tim’s books. His thoughts and ideas never disappoint.

Some Of My Highlights:

  • “If you have nothing in your life, but you have at least one person that loves you unconditionally, it’ll do wonders for your self-esteem.”

  • “If you secretly despise wealth, it will elude you.”

  • “You’re not going to get rich renting out your time. You must own equity – a piece of a business – to gain your financial freedom.”

  • “Pick a business partner with high intelligence, energy, and above all, integrity.”

  • “Learn to sell. Learn to build. If you can do both, you will be unstoppable.”

  • “When specific knowledge is taught, it’s through apprenticeships, not schools.”

  • “Business leverage comes from capital, people, and products with no marginal cost of replication (code and media).”

  • “If you can’t code, write books and blogs, record videos and podcasts.”

  • “Study microeconomics, game theory, psychology, persuasion, ethics, mathematics, and computers.”

  • “Reading is faster than listening. Doing is faster than watching.”

  • “You should be too busy to ‘do coffee’ while still keeping an uncluttered calendar.”

  • “Become the best in the world at what you do. Keep redefining what you do until this is true.”

  • “The most important skill for getting rich is becoming a perpetual learner. You have to know how to learn anything you want to learn.”

  • “It’s much more important to be able to become an expert in a brand-new field in nine to twelve months than to have studied the ‘right’ thing a long time ago.”

  • “The people who have the ability to fail in public under their own names actually gain a lot of power.”

  • “You build your brand in the meantime on Twitter, on YouTube, and by giving away free work.”

  • “What you want in life is to control your time. You want to get into a leveraged job where you control your own time and you’re tracked on the outputs.”

  • “You’ll work when you feel like it – when you’re high energy – and you won’t be trying to struggle through when you’re low energy. You’ll gain your time back.”

  • “The one thing you have to avoid is the risk of ruin. Avoiding ruin could also mean you stay out of things that could be physically dangerous or hurt your body. You have to watch your health.”

  • “Warren Buffett wins here because he has massive credibility. Nobody asks him how hard he works. Nobody asks him when he wakes up or when he goes to sleep. They’re like ‘Warren, just do your thing.'”
