They Call Me Supermensch

By: Shep Gordon

This is a great book for artists that are looking for ways to share the value of their art with more people. Shep completely disproves the myth that “if you build it, they will come”.

What an amazing story!

Many artists struggle because they think that promoting their art is “selling out”. Unfortunately, that internal narrative is an obstacle to growth.

In this book, you’ll experience some amazing stories and what could be considered the life “the most interesting man” in the world. Also, you’ll get to see that leading with kindness is not necessarily a weakness. Even in the showbiz world.

Flow: 5/5, this book reads like fiction. Could easily be read in a day or two.

Actionability: 3/5, if you are looking for a “how-to” book this is not it. There’s a lot of wisdom but you’ll have to dig deep to find it.

Mindset: 5/5, the book will get you thinking outside of the box for ways to promote your creations as well as ways to live and examine your life.

Some of My Highlights:

  • “The three most important things a manager does are, number one, get the money. Number two, always remember to get the money. Number three, never forget to always remember to get the money.”

  • “We got very innovative about putting on theatrical performances that didn’t cost a lot – because we didn’t have a lot to spend. We still wanted that standing ovation, and started thinking up ways to get it.”

  • “He was producing the meal the way I produced a show, everything precisely organized, everything was scripted as one of Alice’s concerts.”

  • “Vergé was the first person I ever met who had true success: he had mastered his craft, he had respect from his peers, and he was happy, always happy, because his true joy came from putting the comfort of others before him.”

  • “Seeking means finding a goal. But finding means being free, being open, having no goal.”
